What does copyright protect?
Copyright protects works from being copied, performed or distributed without the permission of the copyright holder. Copying can include acts such as making copies for classroom distribution or scanning a paper copy to create a digital file.
What is subject to copyright?
Copyright-protected materials include literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works, such as books, articles, videos, music, paintings, photographs, sound recordings, broadcasts and performances. This includes works on the Internet.
How does fair dealing work?
The Copyright Act provides educational users with a number of users’ rights. The Copyright Guide can help you determine if a use is fair. In general, a single copy of a short excerpt from a copyright-protected work can be provided to each student enrolled in a course. This copy may be given out as a class handout, posted to eLearn, or included in a course pack.
However, the fair dealing right can be superseded by contractual obligations contained in specific licensing agreements. If unsure, please check with the Library.
How to share copyright-protected materials with your students:
- Create a course pack with the Bookstore.
- Link to materials from the Library’s collection and the Internet. Linking to materials is preferred over uploading files. Before linking or uploading, please check fair dealing and licensing terms.
If linking or uploading is not permitted under fair dealing and licensing terms, the Library can help you find alternatives.
